Keilos has changed quite a lot since he was first introduced here at DT.

First he was a brash young retadin with a bad attitude and severe self-confidence issues:

Then he tried to learn how to heal…and hated it. Shortly thereafter, he met Ysani and fell in love. When his little redhead disappeared, he took up the sword and board and began to search for her. The two of them were reunited, but the price for that little misadventure may not yet be fully paid…

And now, here he is…at the gates of Icecrown Citadel itself. Training time is over, little man. This is what you’ve worked for, this is what you wanted – to be one of the ones Fordring chose to face down the thing that destroyed the Sunwell.

And I must say – he almost looks somewhat competent in his shiny Tier 9 gear, doesn’t he? Except for that silly shield he still has from the heroic Culling of Stratholme.

I’ve been trying to upgrade his shield for some time now. I’ve often groused that when Icecrown hit, he would be tanking it with that damn shield…I had no idea I would actually be right about that. It kept Marrowgar from eating his face, though. Even if I get him an upgrade along the way…for the first pull on Arthas, I may haul the silly thing out to tank him with just for old times’ sake. Linedan says that if I do actually wind up tanking Arthas with Kei’s current shield due to not getting an upgrade of some kind before we get to him, it should go in the Prophecy of Light’s Hall of Fame or something. I might just agree with him.

…and tanking a 10-man raid.

Yesterday, little Keilos, the bratadin, stepped up and officially started his career as one of the two tanks for a fresh Trial of the Crusader 10-man raid. Seems it was just yesterday I was trying to scramble to get him even uncrittable. The raid went well enough, I’d like to think. I know I still need tons more practice on Jormungar maneuvering…but I did much better on infernal-wrangling than I had the last time I’d looked at the inside of that raid from a tank’s point of view. After we’d pwned Anub’arak, we headed off to Dustwallow Marsh to spank Onyxia. Imagine my surprise when the awesomely-geared 25-man MT of the Anvil looks over at me and says he thinks the pally should go tank The Lady.

And we killed her. In fine style for a first-time-out raid, I’d like to think. An auspicious beginning, if nothing else. Also heartening because I didn’t fall on my face and nub it up in front of said Anvil MT or the shaman raid leader, whom I particularly respect.

Many thanks to Dorri’tow for gearing guidance and Keltyr, for being such an awesome tank that I manage to pick up a flicker of his brilliance for Kei to borrow while watching him on my death knight twice a week.

Annd we’re back. There’s been a lot going on in life since the last update – Norman the kitty had another sojurn at the hospital, but is doing better, and two of my oldest characters have migrated from the Alliance to the Horde. You’ll be getting introduced to those two later.

Today, we’re back with another iPod character playlist, this one for Keilos Dawnstar. I’d have had this one up sooner…but Kei has grown and changed so that he kept changing his playlist. So here’s what we have – at least for now.

“Dancing Through Life” from Wicked. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6rqbzuOFtA ) This is Keilos as he first entered play – a drunken, self-centered womanizing brat with more than a few problems. He nearly got himself kicked out of the Blood Knights on multiple occasions. the final one is what brought him into the Prophecy of Light. He’s grown up a lot since then…he still has a few problems, but then, so do we all. The last lines of the song – “And the strange thing’s your life can end up changing while you’re dancing through…” are particulary appropriate for him.

“Son of Man” from Tarzan. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID_bO5CdvDg ) Though Kei’s an elf, not a human…eh, details. He’s grown up so quickly under Dorri and Keltyr’s tutelage and gained such a drive to prove himself, to better himself, to succeed, that this song stuck in my mind as describing him and the changes he’s undergone.

“Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy” by Queen. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wihvdDU7pE ) Another tip of the hat to Kei’s womanizing past. The fact that he’s slept around a great deal in his wastrel days has definitely come back several times to bite him firmly in the ass. Good thing he’s outgrown that stuff, isn’t it?

“The Blue Sea and The White Horse” from Into The West. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSUPLySI3SU ) Kei’s mother, as you may remember, died giving birth to him, so he never knew her. This song reminds me of how he sometimes thinks of her and wishes that wasn’t so. The words of the vocalist also put me very much in mind of what Aissa Dawnstar might have sounded like, singing a lullabye to her sons.

“As Long As You’re Mine” from Wicked. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4tWBetHvsA ) During his time in the PoL, Keilos met and fell in love with a fellow Blood Knight by the name of Ysani Cloudbreaker. This was a very good thing for the both of them – and has had a very strong influence on the both of them as well. These two would break the world for each other, if it’s what they had to do.

“Main Title” from Ladyhawke. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAYduyxFskk&feature=related ) Another nod to Kei and Ysani. I’m not exactly sure why he likes this one so much, unless it’s the way the two music styles weave together…not unlike he and Ysani do when they fight.

“Children of the Revolution” from Moulin Rouge! ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6GDNKk7iGs ) This one is the Prophecy of Light, not just any single knight (or warlock >.> ) therein. They’re young, they’re smart, they’re sexy…and they’re all incredibly dangerous, because they’re having to find their own way in a world that was turned upside-down for their people by the destruction of the Sunwell.

“A Kiss is a Terrible Thing to Waste” from Whistle Down the Wind. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L6IYvYZQfDI ) Keilos, being young, impatient, Sin’dorei, and male, can occasionally be a little impulsive…

“You Can Be As Loud as the Hell You Want” from Avenue Q. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EPqOx-Smqrc ) This song probably needs a bit of explanation. The Order’s secretary, Fabrio, complained about being kept up by – a bit of a racket – shortly after Kei and Ysani started sharing a bed for purposes other than sleep. They were both deeply embarrassed, despite the fact that Dorri and Kel are probably at least as loud, if not noisier. So Kei went to his engineer brother and acquired a “white noise” generator for Fabrio so that everyone could do as they pleased and not wake the secretary. So blame this one on Fabrio.

“I’m a Believer” by Smash Mouth. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B17W_HT3A9E ) Funny thing about damaged people finally getting in a stable relationship…they tend to be so very grateful for it. I tried to talk Keilos into the original Monkees version of this song, but he wasn’t having it.

There are a few other songs on his playlist…but I can’t find Interwebs files for them. So we’ll have to go with this for now. As always, if you have suggestions for music you think would be appropriate, do let me know.

There come times in your life when a particular piece of music and a particular situation meet up and stick with you forever. I was reminded of one of those this afternoon on the way home from work by my iPod on “shuffle.”

The music – the theme to Jurassic Park. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RUuftOG1DQ&feature=PlayList&p=24BA1BAE93278D50&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=1

I was about sixteen or so when I saw this movie. That summer, my mother would hand me the car keys and a $20 bill, and send me and my little brother out the door for the afternoon. We could get lunch, tickets to a matinee movie, and a snack for that twenty. And Rhett and I saw Jurassic Park together. It was one of the first, if not the first, to feature the new DTS digital sound. It was also among the first to make amazing advances in special effects. So this music, combined with the moment when Dr. Grant first sees the apatosaurs…whoa. The music swells, and the dinosaur comes back down from rearing up with a thunderous “boom” that you felt in your chest. And the look on Sam Neill’s face in the film was the same look you were wearing – a look of sheer wonder at what you were seeing.

I remember that big reveal every time I hear this piece of music, and it makes me think of that wonder.

So how about you guys? Any pieces of music have special connections for you?

Back again with another playlist. This one belongs to Dandill Boughstrider, the Blood-Knight-turned-Death-Knight. He’s a strange one to have had to find music for, and his playlist feels especially sparse. So as before, any song suggestions are more than welcomed. I’ll attempt to find YouTube links for his songs, but if I should happen to not be able to, get thee to the music store.

“Cold” by The Everly Brothers ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5We5APWsPis ) This song was written by Andrew Lloyd-Webber for his musical “Whistle Down the Wind.” I think you can figure out once you listen to it why it’s so terribly apropos for a DK.

“Try to Remember” from The Fantasticks ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7nOkVz79Xw ) Dandill, like many Death Knights, has several blank patches in his memory where death and resurrection have taken what was supposed to be there. Dandy, in particular, has been very proactive about attempting to recover his lost memories. Hence the marvelous Jerry Orbach’s song.

“Legal Assassin” from Repo! The Genetic Opera ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-lk0bSPcXpU ) “Monster, butcher, assassin, murderer…” This song touches on the mental divide Dandy has between the mild-mannered Holy paladin that he was and the violent death knight he is. The whispers at the beginning of the song are something that Dandill himself has dealt with in the past, and may deal with yet again as he attempts to integrate the two disparate halves of his personality.

“Flight to Neverland” from Hook ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5H0sCdvZ14 ) Dandill has earned the company of a red drake by the name of Kashet. As time has passed their relationship has become something rather more than a simple friendship. One of their favorite activities is flying. I’ve always loved the sense of freedom that this piece of John Williams’ projects. When I hear it, I can easily imagine Dandy and Kashet dive-bombing a vrykul or two in the Howling Fjord just for fun.

“Where I Want To Be” from Chess ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paU__2zAPnU ) Dandy’s got a lot of worries for a dead guy. He’s the de facto leader of The Ebon Vanguard, so he has to worry about how to best look after the death knights under his command. Then he has to worry about the possibility that he could fall a second time to the Lich King. This song shows the fact that there’s times he feels just a little bit trapped.

“Let the Monster Rise” from Repo! The Genetic Opera ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tgsmszv_4Y0 ) Back when he was a Blood Knight, Dandill was Dorri’tow’s teacher. Thusly, he still feels protective about his now-grown pupil. This song speaks to the fact that he feels that, in a recent situation, he’d failed his “daughter” – and the only way to make the one who hurt her pay was to let the death knight go to work.

“Non Nobis, Domine” from Henry V ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1GDRx-F1C0 ) “Not to us, Lord, not to us, but to you be given the glory.” Dandill was once a paladin – hell, in many ways, he still is one. He hasn’t had his Crowning Moment of Awesome yet, but if he ever does, my money’s on this type of music playing in the background in his head and mine. This piece is also one of the most striking pieces of cinema that Kenneth Branagh has produced. And yes, that is a very young Christian Bale that Prince Hal is toting around in this sequence.

“Lament of the Highborne” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXhx40DcU6Y ) I’m not sure why Dandy, of all my belves, merited this one. I think perhaps it’s that he, like Sylvanas, lost so very much to the Scourge. He just might be in a slightly better position than she is to get some of it back.

“Don’t Fear the Reaper” by Blue Oyster Cult ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llBdmFD6yE4 ) I think this one’s more the bloody-minded DK in the back of Dandy’s head than anything else. Can’t say I disagree with it being here, though.

“I Have a Song to Sing, O” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MSYwCfekhU&feature=PlayList&p=A8545501A62CB63E&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=35 ) I believe this song is from The Yeomen of the Guard. This is the sort of music that Dandy sings when he’s in a mood to do so, which isn’t often. Get him drunk enough, though…

“Half a Moment” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5LzJIkwfFk ) Back when I was just getting started playing Dandy in Northrend, he encountered Dorri Firebloom, who triggered his desire to recover his lost memories. Quite a few of the ones he got back had to do with her, and he has remained quite fond of her. Hence thinking of half a moment with her.

“Being Alive” from Company ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fjrA93_O6Dw ) One of the earliest questions Dandy asked Dorri was “Am I alive, or am I not?” She decided he was, but it took Dandy a while longer to nail down exactly what being “alive” means.

“Hymn to the Fallen” from Saving Private Ryan ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ejg-lPcFxU ) I have often wondered why Dandy picked this one. I finally realized it’s a reference to the fact that he and Drusi were more than likely not alone when they fought and died…they were probably part of a larger force. And whether Dru does or not, Dandy remembers his fallen comrades.

“Forged in Blood” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JEmsedGTuOo ) Whether or not Knight-Captain Boughstrider would like to admit it, he’s a product of Acherus, just like every other Death Knight that Arthas ditched at Light’s Hope. A weapon forged in blood indeed…

Righto. This is the first of the ‘Playlists’ series. As before, we’ll be starting with good old Father Destril, the “redneck blood elf,” as some of my guildies lovingly refer to him

If at all possible, I’ll give you a YouTube link to each song. For some, those links just aren’t available, so you may have to go digging at the local record store if you’re curious. Now…on to the songs and links!

“Even a Miracle Needs a Hand”( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAb1ydYT1h0 ) Ah yes, the heyday of good old Rankin-Bass Christmas specials. I grew up on this one, and the song stuck with me. When Des came into being, a lot of this philosophy made it through into his character. The voice of the father in this clip was provided by Joel Grey.

“Run, Wolf Warrior” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8e1abC9ymNA ) Thanks to not turning in a certain quest in the Howling Fjord and getting a certain offhand item crafted, Father Des has more than a bit of the wolf about him, sometimes even physically. The line in this song – “In your eyes there are cold fires burning, tongues of flame that can never be tamed” – also puts me very much in mind of the green eyes of the Sin’dorei.

“Full of Grace” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3sjSnhZJk0 ) This one was suggested by the player of Then’liath, Destril’s wife. Yes, things are great between them right now – but they’ve had their share of problems, especially shortly after they went to Northrend. It’s a beautiful song, and I felt it deserved a permanent place on the playlist, even if they’ve worked out the issues connected with it.

“You Took the Words Right Out Of My Mouth” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_b5y-mtOJQI ) A certain part of the reason for this being on the list is the spoken bit at the beginning of the song. It reminded me of Des and Then in an amorous and playful mood.

“With You” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwI5K0FDVfc ) In case you haven’t figured it out by now, Destril Redwing is a man very much in love with his wife. This song gives you an idea of how much in love he really is.

“Something Wonderful” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UzKthOlmyaE ) Not so much a song from Des as much as it is about him. I mentioned once that I could easily see Then’liath using this song to explain to her sister, Dorri’tow why she married Destril. Then/Dorri’s player was very much in agreement.

“Thank God I’m a Country Boy” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzldLJcorbo ) Remember when I said that my guildies refer to Des as the redneck blood elf? This is why. Destril is by no means the average noble/quasi-noble Sin’dorei. He’s a farmboy that discovered he had a vocation and went off to seminary. So this song is very much him.

“When the River Meets the Sea” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KaugIUuhmvI&feature=related ) Destril, for some reason, seems to attach himself to the lullaby-like songs on my iPod, and this one was no exception. It’s also a very appropriate song for a Priest in Azeroth, in my humble opinion.

“Violets and Silverbells” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7swH1JSvXY&feature=channel ) This is a song from the Broadway musical “Shenandoah.” For some reason, when I think of the RP event we had that was Des and Then’s wedding, I think of this song. For a better recording, try to find the Broadway soundtrack…it’s a really pretty moment in the show.

“Day is Done” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-U9bKhXyNGg ) This is another one that a) I grew up with, as my parents let me listen to their “Peter, Paul, and Mommy” album and b) Des gravitated to, both as a young man wanting to start a family and a priest in a war-torn world.

“Totems of the Grizzlemaw” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEY8WlMN4V4 ) Hands down, this is my favorite zone music in all of World of Warcraft. As it happens, the Grizzly Hills is Destril’s favorite zone. So he gets this lovely theme all to himself on my playlist.

“There’s Me” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh7agcM5Cp8 ) Destril and his sister-in-law, Dorri’tow Firebloom, have one of the odder friendships I’ve ever witnessed. I don’t know how, exactly, but it works. So this is a quiet reminder for Dorri that Des is, indeed there when she needs him.

“Suo-Gan” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ypCRwyvt8o ) Another lullabye. This one happens to be in Welsh, in case you were wondering. If the song sounds familiar, as the singer notes, Spielberg used it in “Empire of the Sun.” I think when he and Then have children, Des will likely be the one putting them back to sleep when they wake in the night, with the number of these songs he likes.

“Bad Moon Rising” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5BmEGm-mraE ) This particular song has sort of a double meaning for Des. There’s the meaning in reference to the ancient connection between wolves and the moon, first. Then, it also reminds him of recent events in which he helped Dorri and her lover, Keltyr, get some well-deserved revenge on some really bad guys…”one eye is taken for an eye.”

“Up Around the Bend” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnRsaHXHznQ ) This one…I can’t exactly explain. All I know is that Des really likes it. Maybe it’s the upbeat tempo and message. Who can tell with that crazy belf?

“We Shall Be Free” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOlT1yN_Crs ) As a blood elf and a relative newcomer to the Horde, Des has had to put up with a certain amount of prejudice from the other Horde races. He’s been able to overcome some of it, but some is still there, as well. More than anything, this song speaks to his philosophy. Yes, I know…it’s Garth Brooks. Sue me.

“The Blood of Cu Chulainn” ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hClyvvZh3w ) Another one I can’t exactly explain, save that perhaps it reflects Des’ determination and courage in the face of adversity. This song originally appeared in the film “The Boondock Saints” under the opening credits, so there may be a little of that in there as well.

Now for those of you who know Des, let me add that I’m always open to song suggestions and finding new music. So if there’s one you think I’ve missed – throw it on out there! I like to see what music makes other people think of my characters.

Annd now back to the WoW-blogness. For those who were here for the last post, Norman is home and doing fine. He’s regained the weight he lost, is eating like a champ, and is back to his old self. So yay!

Now. For today’s Meet the Residents, allow me to introduce you to Keilos Dawnstar.

As you probably can tell, the boy’s gotten a haircut since he had his picture taken for the blog banner. Keilos, I must admit, started his WoW life as a throwaway kind of character that I intended just to kind of dink around on to see what playing a paladin was like. Before I knew it, he’d developed a backstory and a personality and had, not unlike kudzu, grown up and took over. Kei’s got one of the sadder backstories I’ve come up with, and it’s made playing him as a character sort of an interesting challenge. As he’s grown and developed, he’s become one of my favorite characters, even if he is in a bit of a rough spot storyline-wise right now. He’s had a Friday Five ficlet that gave a glimpse into his past, but didn’t tell the whole story. His mother died in childbirth, and his father, unable to deal with the grief and guilt he felt at the loss of his wife, rejected his son, who he blames for causing her death. Therefore, Kei grew up more than a little emotionally imbalanced. Dorri still wants to deck his father for Kei’s childhood, and at some point, Kei may actually let her.

If there’s one thing his current plot has taught me, it’s that Playing Insanity Is Not Easy. I’m sure it’s by far simpler if you’re on stage playing Ophelia in Hamlet or something like – Shakespeare already did all the work for you as far as what the character’s supposed to say. It’s much harder in an improvisational art form like WoW roleplay because I have to remember how I’ve determined his problems will manifest, keep an eye on him not saying too much because there’s a secret he’s trying to keep, and allow him to say enough to drop clues that something’s Not Right with him. I’ve enjoyed the challenge…but I’ll be glad when the plot’s done so he can work his way back to the saner Keilos everyone knows and loves.

Keilos is also the character with all the Ozian references…don’t ask me why him, I don’t really know. He has a pet cat named Elphi and a bronze drake that goes by the moniker of Tiktok. I’ll have to see if any other ones work their way in there.

Next up…iPod playlists. A look at the music that inspires or is inspired by the characters that call this blog their home.

Okay. For the first time, this blog is going to step away from the World of Warcraft for a second.

Meet my cat, Norman.

Norman hasn’t been well the last few days, so I took him to the vet yesterday, terrified that I was dropping him off and would never be bringing him home again. Today, they called me to tell me that my buddy, my boy, my WoW-watching kitty – is diabetic.

My reaction? Relief. “Oh, is that all.” You see, I have diabetes, too. I was diagnosed with Type 1 (aka “juvenile” diabetes) shortly before my 8th birthday. Norman has saved me from night-time lows a time or two in the past by waking me up enough to realize that I needed to check my sugar and get some juice. Now it’s my turn to do for him.

I was afraid I was looking at kidney failure, FeLV, FIP, cancer – something truly horrible. Diabetes? Scary – but in this household, we’ve been making that disease our bitch for years now.

This, we can handle.

I’ve noticed a certain similarity in design between some of the Ulduar non-tier gear and the costumes from “Starlight Express”…to the point that we had the Noxilite out-of-character channel nearly in tears last night discussing it.

To show you what I mean, here is the evidence I have.

As you see on the male actor, the shoulders and boots like quite a bit like Ulduar gear. Just check out http://panzercow.wordpress.com/2009/06/19/vanity-for-once-thy-name-is-linedan/ . Don’t our lovely Panzercow’s shoulders look quite a bit like, well…cowcatchers? No pun intended of course, Lin…please don’t Shield Slam me.
And for those who were WTF-ing about us saying Dorritow had the hair to play one of the dining cars…doesn’t this shot just somehow remind you of Dorri and Keltyr?

For the record, the dining car’s name is, indeed, Dinah. The diesel engine there? His name’s Greaseball. And Pill and Fy are going to kill me for this…/snicker

Yes…it lives! And there is a plan in place now. Once you’ve met the main three residents…you’ll get a peek into their playlists from my iPod. This is coming after the introductions so I will a)actually get them out of the way and b) have time to find YouTube links for some of the weird songs I have on those lists. But for today, we’ll be meeting the death knight up there, Knight-Captain Dandill Boughstrider of The Ebon Vanguard.

((Yes, I know that’s the starter gear from Acherus. Yes, I still have it. Why? Because it looks that damned awesome.))

Dandill here used to be a Blood Knight – an instructor at that, a teacher of healing. Then, due to his good nature, he got paired up with a crazy female Forsaken warrior and sent off to battle evil. Then, as the saying goes…Scourge happened, and all his Holy talents couldn’t keep the two of them alive. They were both raised as death knights, and still are friends in whatever strange kind of undeath they currently exist in.

Dandill – “Dandy” for short – has been best described as a cross between the Tenth Doctor from “Doctor Who” and Rupert Giles/Ripper from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He’s a gentle soul who can turn just about anything into a lecture – which drives his former pupil Dorri’tow crazy sometimes. Endanger something he protects and/or cares about, though, and there will be violence. There is very much a death knight under that cultured, genteel exterior.

Dandy has a strong alliance with the Wyrmrest Accord, and can most often be found in the company of Kashet, the red drake. She’s young, spunky, and very attached to him, so she often shows up in her elven form in places that dragons aren’t technically supposed to be.

Dandill’s a fun character to play. He’s been one of the first to have long-term fears that have affected his interactions with other players and characters, as well as being a refreshing change from Destril. Des has his prickly moments – has a lot of them, in point of fact. Dandy, on the other hand, can get along with just about anybody, it would seem. He can simply accept the insults other races throw at him because he’s at least nominally Sin’dorei because he’s heard much worse words thrown at him because he’s a death knight.

Anyway…that’s Dandy. Next up is Keilos Dawnstar, aka “the Brat.”
